Pack your sneakers. This may seem like a "duh," but if you don't pack your sneakers, you won't work out. Easy.
Pack travel snacks. Even if you plan on eating out during your entire vacation, you'll still want snacks to stay fueled and sane during the actual traveling. It's fine if you want to indulge with local cuisine, but don't start your trip on the wrong foot with a rest stop McDonald's lunch. Some of my favorites include:
- Nutrition bars for sweet cravings, plus protein, fiber, and carbs (depending on the brand).
- Hummus and nuts for protein.
- Grape tomatoes and popcorn for when you just want something low-calorie to snack on.
- WATER. Lots and lots and lots of water.
Utilize bodyweight exercises. These are great if you dont' have access to a gym. Steve of Nerd Fitness wrote a great post outlining a bodyweight strength workout for beginners.
Fitness podcasts and apps. If you have an iPod or smartphone, these can be a great resource for a dedicated sweat session. Two suggestions:
- Nike Training Club. Has a variety of workouts, some are cardio-based, some are strength-based, and some are a combination. Gives great verbal cues and includes videos showing proper form. Works offline and allows you to play your music in the background.
- Power Yoga with Dave Farmar podcast. Practices run for about an hour. He has a really fun, relaxed personality.
Do you have any tips for staying fit while travelling?

Great article especially for summer time when so many of us are traveling :) I always bring a jumprope and resistance band with me. 0 space and 0 weight but work when you need a quick workout in your room especially if you don't have time to run down to the gym (or the gym sucks) haha*
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing,

I've been interested in getting into resistance band work. I think I'm afraid that the handles will slip and snap at me, which is silly. I'll give them a shot!
DeleteGreat blog post! I did a post right before I left for CO about eating healthy on the long car ride (Colorado Road Trip: How we travel). Can't wait to see pics from New Mexico!
ReplyDeleteYour CO post came *right before* we left. It was super helpful with packing our snacks!
DeleteIt's always a million times easier when you have someone there with you who has similar goals. I went to Chicago with a good friend back in April, but we both had our long runs to do while there. We paired up, and explored the city over 11 miles. Best thing ever.
ReplyDeleteWow! That sounds like an amazing run and the perfect way to explore a city. When we travel, we always try to tour on foot as much as possible.
DeleteA big +1 to the sneakers. Such a travel essential. You can forego pretty much anything to make sure you have good shoes to go and see the world!
ReplyDeleteI also like to use FitBit when I am travelling. The steps thing really motivates me to see how far I've travelled and to challenge me to move more the next day!
I'm really tempted to buy a FitBit! I keep hearing great things about it and I'm sooo curious to know how many calories I actually burn during the day.
DeleteI really love mine - it's a big motivator! I'd recommend it :D
DeleteI ALWAYS bring my workout gear on vacation! It helps me stay on track and I always feel better after a workout, even if it's a quick one. My boyfriend and I usually have really active vacations. We both like hiking and cycling and sight seeing.
ReplyDeleteI try to bring protein bars for easy snacks. It's also a good thing to have for a breakfast pre-workout when nothing else is available.
Having a protein bar is a good tip! You never know when you'll be hungry and stranded.
