| Adopt this lovely gal! |
On Sunday, we visited our local humane society and walked a few dogs. This is something that I used to do often, but have shamefully neglected over past months. My husband also came along to help - two dogs can be quite a handful.
It's so rewarding to see a dog flop onto his bed after a long walk. The shelter says that many dogs are passed over simply because they appear too hyper. People don't always understand that the shelter's environment is incredibly stimulating and that the dogs may not have gotten any exercise that day...or even the day before.

If you're thinking about a new friend, I really do encourage you to at least visit your local shelter. Even if you're interested in a specific breed, a little patience will often see one turn up. Also, I was adopted and look how well I turned out ;)
Speaking of turning out well, today is Monday and time to review my goals. I realize that discussing (literally) the same topic every week can be tedious, but this reconciliation really makes me feel accountable during the week. And thank you for your support!
GMAT Not as well as the week before. I've been making a list of which specific math topics need to be reviewed the most. Darn you, probabilities!
Read Birds are so fascinating. Did you know that some lady birds can eject sperm if an undesirable male mates with her? Cray.
Strength I love this, every single time. It gives me infinitely more confidence than cardio ever did and my only wish is that I had started earlier.
Calories I've been counting a little more strictly in efforts to curb my sweet tooth. So far, so good.
Crochet SUCCESS! After four weeks of being a slacker, I started and finished a kitten-sized blanket for the animal shelter...the caveat being that I used scrap yarn and it is hideous. My husband reassured me that the cats don't mind.

This Rice & Lentil Salad from EatingWell.com. Does it count as trying a new recipe if you don't really follow the recipe? I pretty much subbed everything based on what I had.
This Smothered Tempeh Sandwich from EatingWell.com. Made mine open face and omitted the red wine. Can't really go wrong with cheesey tempeh.
Skinnytaste's Pumpkin Muffins. These were amazing. I've made a few of her other recipes and they've all been incredible.
ps - Did you know that Saturday was the first day of fall? Hooray!
Did you do anything fun over the weekend?
Happy happy fall! Can't wait to try those pumpkin muffins. And congrats on finishing the kitty blanket. I really admire your long-term commitment to your goals!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jenica! It's silly, but I'm really proud of that little blanket :)
DeleteI've already broke up the pumpkin :) And I couldn't agree with you more about adoption. After adopting a dog, I don't think I could go to a breeder. I love my little mixed breed!
ReplyDeleteMixed breeds are so much more interesting and mysterious! I'm so glad that you adopted :D
DeleteI want a dog sooooo badly . . . the only problem is that I live in a condo, and we can't have pets in the building. :( I seriously want to move just so I can have a dog.
ReplyDeleteThe tempeh melt looks delicious! I'll have to look that up. Happy Monday!
We live in a 3rd floor apartment right now and have also considered moving just to get a dog. Someday!
DeleteYou should definitely try that melt. It was wonderful :)
Thank you for your note, Michelle!
I have major puppy fever! I've been wanting a dog for a long time now, but it's still not the right time for me.
ReplyDeleteI laughed out loud at your bird fact. That is SO awesome haha.
You should be a dog walker, too! It helps when I'm lonely for a fuzzy buddy.
DeleteI love that you are enjoying your strengthening sessions! I agree with you....weight lifting makes me feel so much stronger than cardio! A mix of both is definitely key ;)
ReplyDeleteBALANCE, yes! I'm trying to learn that you don't have to spend hours running to be fit (though it doesn't necessarily hurt).
DeleteYou are so inspiring with your goals! My puppy is a rescue dog! I think that is awesome you go to the shelter to walk dogs - I never thought about it, but I'm sure it is something they all need! And I am totally going to make that rice and lentil salad - I have been needing some vegan food in my life - looks so good and healthy!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jane!
DeleteI'm SO glad to hear that you rescued your pup! It makes me really happy to know that another dog got a nice, loving home :)
" Also, I was adopted and look how well I turned out ;)" Seriously, you're too cute. This totally made me chuckle to myself and my roommate gave me a weird look. Awesome job sticking with your goals btw!
ReplyDeleteHa! Thank you, Jessie!
DeleteI might adopt a dog or cat once I move out from my parents, but for now my parents will not hear it. I do have a cat (had her for 10 years now)and there's a bit of drama about her going on the floor and her being obese. Still I do want some sort of a companion once I'm on my own :P
ReplyDeleteAwww, poor thing. It can be really hard to live with an aging pet - breaks your heart :(
DeleteDOGGIES! I want to adopt them all :)
ReplyDeleteME TOO!!
DeleteAw, look at all those pups! We adopted our dog through a Lab rescue. When we took him, his name was Slim because he was so skinny - 45 pounds! He's now 12+ years (don't know how old he was when we got him, but we've had him 12 years now) and around 80 pounds. :D
ReplyDeleteI used to subscribe to Eating Well, now I just check the recipes out online. :D
Aw, I'm so glad to hear about your Lab! That makes me really happy.
DeleteI also just browse their recipes online - I like to read the reviews ;)
I would love a dog!! Maybe once I graduate!
ReplyDeleteThat would be a great way to celebrate! :D
DeleteCats definitely don't mind :) I love how dedicated to your goals you are! Just getting caught up on posts...Love that picture of you and the pup!
ReplyDeleteAw, thanks for the nice words, Nikki!
DeleteHaha, I love your note on adoption :) If I ever get a dog, it will be from a shelter. My family has always bought pure-bred German Shepherds, and half of them have been complete messes, so it's not like that's any more of a "guarantee" of a good dog than a shelter one.
ReplyDeleteGlad you're noticing the confidence thing with weightlifting! I did cardio for years, and never felt like I did enough, was getting results, felt that good about myself or my workouts--started with weightlifting? Instant emotional change!
Totally right on that pure-bred note. My husband's family actually experienced something similar. After years of mutts, they "splurged" on a weimaraner, who was an emotional mess, so they rescued a mutt dog to be her companion and now everyone is happy as pie :)
DeleteWeight lifting is such a godsend! It's crazy - I wear the same dress size and have the same measurements as before, but I feel SO much better about myself.
